Tips to Save Fuel When Driving

Fueling up the family vehicle costs a lot more than it used to. If you’re feeling the pinch at the pump, here are a few ways to save on fuel consumption.

Natural Resources Canada, Canada’s steward of natural conservation, offers several fuel-saving tips for motorists, whether in Canada, the US, or driving anywhere else. However, among the most efficient ways to save is to drive less.

It may seem obvious, but many short (or long) trips that we take may not be necessary at all. As a bonus, you might save money on your auto insurance as well. Many insurers offer discounts or lower rates for drivers who drive fewer miles.

If you must drive, consider making a few adjustments to your routine.

–  Accelerate gently. It’s not a race. Hard acceleration uses much more fuel compared to slowly accelerating to your desired speed. However, you have to balance fuel consumption with safety. You wouldn’t want to go too slowly when merging with traffic, for example, or when traffic is approaching.
– Keep speeds steady. It’s easier for your engine to keep your vehicle moving at a steady speed rather than accelerate again after losing speed. Try to keep your speed steady when possible.
– Avoid speeding. Driving fast can create a danger to you and others, but it’s also costing you money. Driving at 120 km per hour can use 20% more fuel compared to driving within a range of 50 to 80 km. In the US, the same can be said of driving 75 Mph compared to 50 Mph.
– Avoid idling. If you’ll be stopped for more than 60 seconds, it’s usually more fuel efficient to turn off the vehicle and restart it rather than idling.
– Maintain proper tire pressure. Underinflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 5% or more. Follow the recommendation in your owner’s manual to achieve the best fuel efficiency combined with the optimal footprint for traction.
Reduce weight. Many motorists carry around things they may not need, such as sports equipment or other items. Reduce weight to save on fuel costs. Also, consider removing roof racks or bicycle racks you don’t need daily.
– Use navigation. Even if you know where you’re going, today’s navigation apps may be able to find a more fuel-efficient route.  Small changes can add up to bigger savings.

By attacking your fuel consumption from all angles, you’ll find more ways to save. And for local trips, consider walking or riding a bike. You’ll see your local world in a whole new way compared to driving, all while saving on fuel costs.
