Rental Scooters and eBikes: Are you Covered?
Rental eBikes and scooters have become prolific in some cities, with micromobility expected to continue its growth in the coming years. These services offer a valuable convenience, allowing on-demand transportation in urban areas without the cost of ownership.
But are you well-protected when renting an eBike or scooter? The answer varies depending on the risks.
Which risks do rental scooters and eBikes bring?
Rental eBikes and scooters bring three primary risks, some of which affect you, the renter, and some of which involve others.
– Physical damage to the rented vehicle: From crashes to scratches, when you rent a vehicle, you’re usually responsible to return the vehicle in the same condition. Theft is a physical damage risk as well.
– Injuries caused to you: For many of us, it’s been a while since we’ve ridden a bike or scooter. Accidents happen, possibly resulting in injuries to the rider.
– Liability risks: Liability refers to our financial responsibility to others due to our actions (or inactions). Imagine crashing a rented eBike into a parked car or accidentally hitting a pedestrian crossing the street.
Many rental companies offer insurance riders can purchase to protect against some of these risks. Although the extra coverage can drive up rental costs, the rental coverage may be your only protection in many situations.
– Medical: Your existing health insurance can help pay for injuries you suffer in a rented eBike or scooter mishap. In some states, your auto insurance can even help, but only if you’re injured by an automobile.
– Physical damage: The rental provider may offer supplemental coverage for physical damage or theft. However, in many cases, the renter has to assume all responsibility for damage. Unfortunately, a home or auto policy won’t provide coverage for damage to a rented micromobility vehicle.
– Liability coverage: Similarly, a home or auto policy usually won’t provide liability coverage for a rented scooter or eBike. Auto policies limit protection to cars and non-commercial trucks, and home policies typically exclude coverage for powered vehicles. This risk area can be the most troubling because liability losses can be sizable, especially in mishaps involving injuries to others.
Read the Terms of Service before renting
As the market matures, expect better solutions to address micromobility rental risks. But for this stillyoung market, there can still be some concerning gaps in coverage that can lead to significant financial exposure. Each rental service approaches the coverage situation in its own way. Invest some time in reading the Terms of Service to be certain you understand what’s covered — and what isn’t — before you ride.
